Cutting Technique

Every haircut is some combination of three techniques. Graduation builds weight at the perimeter. Layering removes it from the interior. Texturising breaks a hard line. Which combination you get depends on your head shape, not on the photograph you brought.

Weight sits where the head is flat and disappears where it curves. A stylist reads the occipital bone, the crown and the hairline before deciding where graduation goes — which is why the same cut looks different on two people, and why it should.

How do I judge a stylist?

Did they look at your hair dry before touching it? Did they ask how much time you spend on it each morning? Did they check the cut dry at the end? Three yeses is a good sign.

Will you tell me if a style won't work?

Yes. Anyone will say yes to a photograph. A good stylist explains why your growth pattern will fight that fringe and offers something that will not.

How often should I get a haircut?

Short graduated men's cuts need three weeks to stay clean; longer textured cuts stretch to eight. Women's cuts typically six to ten weeks depending on shape.
